In the last days of World War II, the Allied Army desperatly searched for a bridgehead across the impenetrable Rhein River, in order to launch a major assault into the center of Germany. "Bridge at Remagen" tells the true story of the battle for this last bridgehead, from both the German and American perspective.

Review :

A forgotten, gritty little gem.

'The Bridge at Remagen' has, for what ever reason, largely been lost or forgotten by today's movie-going public. I think this is a real shame because the sensibilities and attitudes that the film has toward it's own themes fit very much into the modern movie-goer's. Films like 'The Big Red One,' 'Saving Private Ryan,' 'The Thin Red Line,' and a host of other modern war films owe their dark edge to earlier films like 'The Bridge at Remagen.' 'The Bridge at Remagen' is about worn out soldiers. It is a film that doesn't like war, and stews in bitterness. George Segal's world weary eyes are matched only by Robert Vaughn's. Two men, one an American and the other a German who are trying less to kill the others forces than they are trying to just keep the men that they command. Segal has been ordered to capture the town around the bridge. He's told not to worry about the bridge because it is assumed that the Germans will have blown it up themselves by the time he gets there with his troops, or that the Allied air force will bomb it in order to trap and destroy the German 15th Army ... an army on the wrong side of the bridge. Vaughn, excellently playing the conflicted Major Kruger, is ordered to blow up the bridge. The 70,000 troops of the 15th Army and countless civilians are to be sacrificed at the greater expense of protecting Berlin. The General who gives Major Kruger the order to blow up the bridge suggests that holding the bridge for as long as possible so that fleeing troops and civilians can escape might not be a bad idea. This ultimately leads to tragedy for both sides.

The film is highlighted by worn out lower level officers who must command on the front lines, and the incompetent or uncaring officers who outrank them. These lower ranking officers and their men are merely pawns to be pushed beyond the breaking point and destroyed. The lower level officers see letters of condolence that they need to write for the families of the fallen men serving under them. The higher ranking officers see flags on maps. 'The Bridge at Remagen' is deeply cynical and highly embittered. Although it is in my mind superior in every way to similarly themed films like 'Anzio,' It was overshadowed and consumed by films with bigger budgets and star power. Need one look much further than 'A Bridge Too Far'? The two leads, Segal and Vaughn are both tremendous and are playing their parts in top form. Vaughn especially turns in some of the best work of his career.

The only real flaws in 'The Bridge at Remagen' aren't too serious, but they are strong enough to detract overall. The direction does lean toward heavy-handed pedantics and this can become aggravating. Only having a soldier standing in front of the camera and yelling "WAR IS BAD! WAR IS BAD!" over and over again would it have been more 'in your face.' The movie also suffers from some pacing issues, especially early on, although I think it is redeemed by the hard and gritty ending.

'The Bridge at Remagen' -- very much worth taking a look at if you can find it, and almost certainly belongs (with pride) on the DVD shelf of any serious WW2 film fan.

Review :

Cultural watershed movie

Stiletto is watchable for three reasons. First it is visibly the product of an industry in transition. The main character is a mixture of James Bond and the Godfather's hit man Luca Brasi: A Sicilian who owes a Mafioso because he once saved his life. He gets regular assignments to kill potential opponents or trial witnesses. But he also lives the life of an international playboy. So we have these typical casino/penthouse/yacht scenes with lounge music and heavily made up, lavishly jeweled dames with mountains of hair topping their heads. On the other hand, the style of the coming Godfather-movies announces itself. One example is the very bizarre, sepia colored title sequence recording the incident in which the hero got indebted to the Mafioso. It has an entirely different style from the rest of the movie, as if it was done by an entirely different crew. There is also a board meeting of the gangster syndicate with an interesting 360 degree pan from the middle of the conference table. The movie soundtrack is also remarkable as it has elements of the sixties and darker, quirkier tones of movie conventions yet to come to full bloom.

Secondly, Stiletto boasts cameos of several people who later became stars or at least well known character actors: an amazingly chubby Roy Scheider as the mobster's lawyer (the physical frame goes well with the part), Charles Durning as a police officer, Raul Julia as a party guest and M. Emmett Walsh as the main character's racing buddy are the ones I recognized. I also thought I spotted Antonio Fargas, but he is not in the IMDb-credits.

Thirdly, the locations are well used. A large part of Stiletto was filmed in Puerto Rico, the final sequences take place in the Conquistador hotel complex, a masterwork of famed architect Morris Lapidus (also designed the Fontainebleau in Miami Beach). The places which represent Sicily are probably also locations in Puerto Rico, the rest of the movie was filmed on the Eastern Seabord and in New York. There is also an interesting meeting place of the O'Neal and Ekland characters, a kind of an open meeting or festival hall with a partly colored glass dome.

Stiletto in many parts resembles a TV production. It is not a really great movie, but for anyone interested in the mentioned three points well worth its time.

" If you can do something well, do it. Before, time catches up with you "

During the life of Charlton Heston, he often selected to personify men who lived larger than life. Yet, for all of his superior talent, he often said he liked to portray ordinary men in ordinary lives. One exceptional film was 'Will Penny.' Here is another. The movie is called " Number One. " In this role he plays NFL football Quarterback, Ron Catlan. For several years he has been the mainstay player for the New Orleans Saints and has proved to be an exceptional individual. Years ago, he was selected to be the Quarterback and has taken the team to a number of play offs and a Superbowl. During the up-ward climb, men have come to respect and admire him, in addition he has garnered the praise and accolades of both his fans and his team mates. Indeed, everywhere he is seen, both professional men and adoring women seek him out. But that was then, now-a-days, he is being reminded by his coach (John Randolph) that time is catching up to him. Former team players like Richie Fowler (Bruce Dern) who are successful businessmen, advise him to quit football soon and market his name to an advantage. Yet, 'Cat' feels his present career can last several more years and doesn't want forced retirement. Hoping for the best, he plays as if his skill will last beyond his present ability. Roy Jenson makes a brief appearance. ****

Unique War film not perfect but extremely educational and entertaining

Much like THE LAST VALLEY is the only real (known to me anyway) film to deal with the '30 Years War', this film is the only one (that I know of) to cover the 'Russo-Japanese War'. It's interesting as this piece of history isn't really covered much. At the turn of the century there was a lot of feuding between the European powers, especially over their empires in China, the Middle East, and Africa. It was the era when new weapons were constantly being introduced and when newly industrialized nations (like Japan) were building their military machines and new ships to rule the seas. This unique era provided armies the opportunity to slaughter each other with modern weapons like artillery and magazine-loading guns, without the benefit of tanks or airplanes (which to me makes war a lot less interesting and with one side or the other with an unfair overwhelming advantage).

This movie excellently brings such combat to life, and (unlike LAST VALLEY which was a small slice of life) covers the full breadth of the conflict... culminating in the huge and decisive battle in the Tsushima Straights between the fledgling Japanese force and the mighty 40-ship Russian Baltic Fleet which had sailed around the world for 6 months to fight them.

This film was the final penultimate film for Japanese special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya, who provides some of his best, most detailed, and most convincing miniature work ever. There's a healthy number of composite shots to blend the miniatures with the live action, and the effects are overall quite amazing (though not completely convincing). The acting (especially with American expatriates as Russians) leaves some to be desired, but one has to give the Japanese credit for improvising since Russia angrily refused to cooperate with this production at all.

The land battles during the siege of Port Arthur are quite large and exciting, even genuinely moving in a few places as you can really feel General Nogi's frustration with the extremely high casualties and lack of progress. Mifune brings a great gravitas to his role as Togo, dubbed "Japan's Nelson" at the time, and several of the better character actors from the early Godzilla movies pop up as random officers. The ending features a similar speech to Christopher Plummer's in the following year's WATERLOO, which gives all the fun, excitement, and jingoism a more somber spin.

I must also mention the excellent cinematography, staging, and music which give the film a very polished look of a monumental, groundbreaking epic. More so than most other war films of the time. Sure this film takes a few Historical liberties (mostly to simplify the more complex battles) but it still provides a lot of eye-opening insight on a largely forgotten, but significant war (in that it set the stage for the Russian Revolution AND the second Sino-Japanese war).

All in all, I was not disappointed. For a Japanese war movie, it's the best I've seen, right up there with the sadly rare STORM OVER THE PACIFIC.

A waste of time only if you're looking just for a cheap skin flick

This is an film which is based on the book "Philosophy in the Boudoir" by the Marquis de Sade. Originally written in 1795, it is perhaps the most representative of all the Marquis de Sade's works. The script very cleverly adapts the original story for the modern time (that is 1970). Dialog is brilliant (Christopher Lee is mostly reading the original text by de Sade). Music is excellent. Acting is superb by all actors, most notably Maria Rohm, Jack Taylor and Christopher Lee. Marie Liljedahl is very convincing as the innocent young girl (she was just 19 while shooting). I don't like the idea to have an even younger actress for the part (like some other comment here seems to advise)! The cinematography fascinatingly uses the space on screen in focusing (and sometimes not focusing) different aspects of the image. But I must admit that this technique works much better on the big screen. Luckily I had the possibility the see this amazing piece of art in a theatrical screening. The film is highly recommended if you like the work of Luis Bunuel, Orson Welles, Douglas Sirk, Roman Polanski, Perdo Almodovar or David Lynch.

That all said, avoid the film if your just looking for a cheap skin flick. You won't find it here. Go to your next videostore and rent something else: "If you want to watch porn, then buy the real thing" (like one other reviewer said). This one has absolutely nothing to do with porn. If you never heard of de Sade and if you have no interest in art and an experimental approach of film-making, you will find this film boring, stupid and you won't understand what's it about.

Nobody seems to have seen this interesting movie.

Comencini shows us the 18th century Venice, a lusty and quite filthy place were ignorance rivals with appearances. Casanova is more a pretext than a pivotal character, he is portrayed as a handsome lad who does not grasp what is happening to him. The real Casanova was more astute.

Review :

Does it really contrast socialization with instinct?

The film is well made with good performances by Victor the wild child as well as Truffaut as his doctor and father figure.

Truffaut's main concern is studying what humans really are when you strip away the socialization process. Do we have morals? Language abilities? Compassion? This was also the main question for Dr. Itard who raised the boy after he was found.

However, the legitimacy of the wild child is called into question early in the film. Is Victor a normal human child or was there something abnormal about him that caused his family to abandon him? If he was abnormal to begin with, then we really can't conclude anything about what humanity would be like without the socialization process.

Reading through Dr. Itard's notes, many have concluded that Victor was an autistic child. His parents probably found him uncontrollable and abandoned him in the woods. So while Dr. Itard believed he was seeing the results of a normal boy with no socialization, he was probably seeing the results of a normal autistic child.

Despite this problem, the film is still interesting to watch but it ends up raising more questions than it answers.

Lumet's Othello-like story pales in comparison to his better work

Considering the film was made in 1969, the film is interesting in its approach to subjects, camerawork, acting, etc. Lumet being an American was making a European film in style and content. Some of the camerawork along the streets of Rome reminds you of Boorman's "Point Blank" (1967) or Goddard's "Alphaville" (1965). It has a pointless helicopter shot of the lovers in embrace in an open field which six years later was used with great elan by Arthur Penn in another existential story "Night Moves" as the final shot in that movie. The film has no semblance to the typical Hollywood cinema of late sixties; it is closer to European cinema which Boorman was able to capture quite effectively with existential dilemmas presented on screen. Lumet went on to make much more memorable films, one of which was "Equus".

The story of a doubting lover, a jealous husband has been presented on screen several times. It is an Othello story retold. Omar Sharif's lead role appears plausible but he seems to overdo every detail. His cigarette smoking scene was meant to be a picture of nervousness--yet he is rarely seen smoking during the course of the film. Lumet seems to overlook details. Or is he teasing you?

Anouk Aimee is great to watch because she is so good looking not because she acts well--at least she is not convincing in this film. What is her relationship with the young man on the island? Lumet makes us wonder with the meaningful shot of the man's face on the second trip of the couple to the island. We are left guessing about Aimee's true character even after the end. Everything is open ended, except for the Othello-like lead character. Probably this was the reason for the film being nominated for the Golden Palm at Cannes. Lumet succeeds in fleshing out the male character, but fumbles with the female lead character. Perhaps it was his intention to leave us guessing.

The film remains a puzzle, a good effort that pales in comparison to Lumet's better works like "Equus", "12 Angry Men" and "the Verdict".

One of the best films from the entire '60s

A small masterpiece, almost unknown because it was Petrlic's first and only film he ever did before he went on teaching and writing about Cinema in Zagreb as a professor. I've watched this film the other night and went completely crazy about it. It's Chabrol, Godard, Bresson, Cassavetes, Lester, Pannebaker - in a quiet, subtle, almost childish situations and resolutions within it, but yet clever, true to life, warm. It's "off-beat" completely - which is strange considering the year of the film (no one in former Yugoslavia did a similar film to this date). It's like a Jarmusch film, but 15 years before Stranger Than Paradise. Two friends are wandering in Zagreb, chasing girls, go to shows, working together, laughing, fighting. Nothing happens really story-wised, but every second something happens between the people in the scene - with the jazz, or piano, or city traffic, or complete silence in the background. Some sort of inner magic just goes from one scene into the other and the ending is hilariously unexpected, human and innocent. Very touching film about young urban people with a loving dose of the old Zagreb's spirit - back in the days that seems much simpler, but it really was completely the same as today or as anywhere else for that matter.

Very underrated, and unknown

A beautiful story, and superb tension, especially the last part of the movie. One of the best movies that Gregory Peck was ever cast. Eva-Marie Saint is excellent as the pleading mother, who desperately wants to leave Arizona. Robert Forester, as Gregory Peck's good friend was also very good in this film.

The marauding Apache, never seen until the last few minutes of the film, leaves a trail of death behind him everywhere he goes.

Great locations, excellent camera work, and a very tight script makes this a very original movie and easy to watch over and over.

This is a stand out film that no one knows. Too bad!!

Slow at times but some good action scenes

Massacre Harbour was the theatrical release of some episodes of the Rat Patrol TV series; the TV episodes were edited together to create the film (on television, the story was called The Last Harbor Raid). Anyone who likes the TV series would definitely like this movie, and even those who never saw the Rat Patrol on the small screen will find it enjoyable. The four-member Rat Patrol is sent in to initiate a mass escape of Allied prisoners from a German POW camp on the North African coast, using the local fishing boats to transport the prisoners to safety. All the cast does well here; Lawrence Casey (Pvt Hitchcock) has a much bigger role than he normally would in the TV series and he gives a memorable performance. Claudine Longet portrays a local singer who assists the Patrol; her acting is fine but her singing gets irritating very quickly. There are some slow parts in the story, particularly about midway through the plot, but the mass escape at the end is exciting and well filmed. Definitely worth watching for any Rat Patrol fan, and non-fans should enjoy it as well.

A Misunderstood, flawed, masterpiece

I recently saw Maidstone in a French DVD and have to say this movie is nowhere as bad as its reputation would have you believe. In fact, in light of the now pervasive presence of 'reality' based TV, the kind which thrives on humiliation, preying on our secret blood lust for murder, Maidstone, like the best of Mailer's literary work, is outright prophetic. Mailer's ambition may not be as long as his reach, but flawed as it is, Maidstone still works like a cinematic Cassandra machine. Not only is it a fascinating dissembling of Mailer and his infamous ego, but it captures the apocalyptic delirium of that terrible year of 1968 better than numerous documentaries made around that time. A significant, tragically under-appreciated, work of the underground cinema that is ripe for rediscovery and re-evaluation!

Time For A Remake

I saw this film as an 11 year old in 1969. Viet-Nam was raging & the country was torn. Hail Hero was a sneak preview at the 163rd Street Theater in North Miami Beach, Florida. Micheal Douglas was strictly known as Kirk's son, and there was a lot of interest to see if he "could" act.

The acting is outstanding and so is the story line. Things never seem to change. War has been around since the beginning of time, and so has serving in the military and defending one's country. The most shocking aspect here was the dead mummy baby in the shoe box. Lots of symbolic levels here and it's clear that this movie is no longer out of date.

This would be a good movie to remake today. I'd rate Hail Hero as a 10.

Review :

This is painful...

Quick cash-ins were common back in the day, but some were actually good. This is not.

Jeff Cameron plays Sartana in an embarrassingly phony blond wig and a white outfit that looks nothing like the Sartana we knew (what were they thinking, that no one would notice?).

The plot concerns a villainous black robed figure, with long grey hair, known as The Mormon who has been organizing the kidnapping of various individuals (by talking to his henchmen from behind a portrait with the eyes cut out) and getting huge ransoms. During his last effort, Sartana interferes and now the Mormon must put together a band of stone cold killers to take him out before the next big job.

Flatly acted and directed with a minimum of production values (not always a bad thing, though), this is probably exactly what non-fans think a Spag is: A boring rip-off with a laughable villain and no budget.

If you've never seen a Sartana movie, please, do not start here! Look for the one's with Gianni (John) Garko and prepare to get hooked!
