From Nashville with talent

This is a visual jukebox of some of the biggest Country stars of the 1960's, including four true giants of the genre, Marty Robbins, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and Don Gibson. The usual inane plot shouldn't detract from the fact that there is a lot of good country music included in the film. Leo G. Carroll of'The Man from Uncle' fame is partnered with Marilyn Maxwell whose car breaks down and Marty Robbins tour bus stops by to help and he also gives them two tickets for the Grand Ole Opry on which he is the star performer. The main source of irritation in the film comes from Gonzalez-Gonzalez a would be Mexican funny man who unfortunately ain't funny. Amongst the song Robbins sings are 'Singing the Blues', 'Tonight Carmen', 'Green Green Grass of Home' and 'El Paso.'

It is a bus that has come from hell.

The Golden Age of sexploitation in the late sixties gives us another feature from Something Weird.

This one is towards the end of the era and it shows. There is actually a story here and much more action that would satisfy viewers.

The production values are still really poor, but there is enough to keep your interest.

It concerns a group of hooligans - four males and a female - that break into a house and rape a housewife after giving her heroin. A saleslady comes to the door and they giver her a sugar cube, presumably with acid, and rape her too.

They then steal a bus, kill the driver, and pick up two more women. Lots of action ensues, including rape and a really hot lesbian scene at the end.

This is definitely a film that earns the genre of sexploitation.

Extraordinarily unsatisfying viewing for none and null

Despite the producers attempts to make a film with some semblance of a budget and cinemascope and bright, pretty colors, the film just seems to be an extraordinary cheat on all levels. Unlike "M*A*S*H," also from 1969 but from 20th Century Fox, "The Extraordinary Seaman" clearly uses stock newsreels as a cheap crutch and as a substitute for advancing action - and when that wasn't enough, they further padded its meager 80 minute running time by manipulating the footage. The attempt throughout to blur the line between newsreels and the film's own footage is clumsily handled. For contrast, try the way this same line was more deftly and more trippily blurred by Richard Lester in 1967's "How I Won the War" with John Lennon. As others here have observed, the breaking of this film into six named "parts" was a pointless exercise. Hell, it didn't work any better when "Frasier" did it on TV years later, did it? Major comedic talents - in particular Mickey Rooney and Jack Carter - are simply wasted in subservient roles, and are allowed to disappear before the film's ignominious conclusion. The casting of the secondary leads, Alda and Dunaway, was just really strange, considering that neither actor projects any kind of romantic vitality. (I would insert that Alda has clearly never developed as an actor, and from that day to this - and as many have observed - he just plays himself in role after role, and merely runs his lines without adding either depth or nuance to characterizations.) I'd say it was astounding how Paddy Chayefsky used Dunaway's reputation as an on screen ice-bitch to monumental advantage in 1976's "Network," with perhaps the most hilarious sex scene ever filmed: the one with William Holden in which she never stops yammering about work for a second. In "The Extraordinary Seaman," there's no clear reason why her character is even there. In fact, the only actor who projects any warmth or depth is David Niven, who makes it all look easy as befits a grand actor of his caliber. However, the role he makes look easy is itself a stupid cheat - a gimmick role that I feel most people in the audience would have figured out long before Alda's character did, due to their 1960's training with twist-ending TV shows such as "The Twilight Zone" and "The Outer Limits." Niven's ever-refilling bottle is the only decent throwaway gag in the entire proceedings, and thankfully John Frankenheimer displayed the judicious restraint to keep the gag from filling the center of the frame as a hack director might have. Alda's character made sure to point each! and! every! other! facet! of Niven's character's quirks to the audience... several times. Even his attempt at mutiny and his repeated man overboard gags are ineptly handled. As a further "goof," one reaction shot of Alda in full face (Part V or VI) is quite clearly reversed and is as painfully obvious as some shots of William Shatner you find in the miserable last year of "Star Trek" in which the same thing was repeatedly done. And by the way, didn't some of those overturned trees in the run-aground sequence look awfully fake? Before TCM ran this film, I had never even heard of it, and now it's clear I know why. It never should have been made.

Very likely my favorite movie ever.

It's been thirty-five years since I first saw this movie. I remember it as well as any movie I've seen. I check every few months to see if it is available in any format. So far I haven't found it. It would be good if someone could be influenced to create a DVD version. I'd buy it in a minute. I'd probably buy several copies and give them to special friends. It may be my favorite movie of all time.

Until I saw the movie, I didn't realize that there was some special music that accompanied WWI. It's music that now brings a tear whenever I hear it. The portrayal of pompous generals and their subservient minions, as they are posting the numbers of deaths and casualties for the day, is beautifully done. They were simply putting up numbers. But each number was often a death. A death of a promising young person. This movie makes war appear as brutal as it can really be. The poor always die first. It would be nice if international law demanded that the political and military leaders of a country be required to send their own children into war first. If that were the case, there would likely be no more war.

should be retitled "The Snooze"

boring, pointless film was marketed as "erotic" in it's day. In order for it to be erotic the actors have to be able to convey sexual excitement, and not one of them can. They can barely handle dialogue. The only reason to see this film is to see Dark Shadows cast member Robert Rodan bare his tush. Once that thrilling moment passes, the film is utterly worthless, so poorly made it's not even campy.

Great Italo-Western, but yet depressing

The whole town of Blackstone is afraid, because they lynched Bret Dixon's brother - and he is coming back for revenge! At least that's what they think.

A great Johnny Hallyday and a very interesting, early Mario Adorf star in this Italo-Western, obviously filmed in the Alps.

Bret Dixon is coming back to Blackstone to investigate why his brother was lynched. He is a loner and gunslinger par excellance, everybody is afraid of him - the Mexican bandits (fighting the Gringos that took their land!) as well as the "decent" citizens that lynched Bret's brother. They lynched him, because they thought he stole their money instead of bringing it to Dallas to the safety of the bank there. But this is is only half the truth, as we find out in the course of this psychologically interesting western.

But beware, it's kind of a depressing movie as everybody turns out to be guilty somehow and definitely everybody is bad to the bone...

Still, I enjoyed it very much and gave it an 8/10. Strange, that only less than 5 people voted for this movie as of January 12th 2002....

"I'll only do my prowling at night."

Disfigured in an African ritual, Edward is kept, "protected", by his brother Julian by being kept chained up in attic. He fakes his death to escape from Julian and another man is killed to take Edward's place in the "oblong box". Film looks like a low-key, photographed stageplay, a well-dressed period piece having little to do with Poe's short story, besides the title box. This is one of those films to watch primarily to enjoy the cast, lush settings and photography, hooded killers, throat-slicings, and a couple of good scares along the way, even if it has little if anything to do with Poe, just don't get one's hopes too high up. It does have a good unmasking scene, and genuinely creepy twist-ending, which still stood out in my mind years after I had last seen this film.

Favourite line: "I'll only do my prowling at night."

Four stars-Don't miss it!

Remember the days when we were all having free sex and enjoining our elders to make love-not war? Well, if you long for those days or would just like to see what they were like, a good way to telescope back to `those thrilling days of yesteryear' would be to watch John and Mary.

This wonderful little gem from the height of the Sexual Revolution era is about young people trying to connect after the sex part is done.

The story begins on the morning after the night before when two strangers awake together in bed. A delightful, youthful Mia Farrow is compelling, bright, sexy and very appealing as Mary. Dustin Hoffman as John is excellent. The story unfolds as the two young characters struggle toward mutual understanding and respect. As they do, I could easily imagine myself among a theater audience in 1969 all rooting for them to succeed.

The script is intelligent and the flashbacks very effective and interesting.

If you like a mature story emphasizing superb character development with fully-realized, appealing characters, this is for you. I give it four stars-my highest rating! But don't try to get this on video or DVD because as far as I know they are not available. You have to wait for it to be shown on cable or at your local art house theater.

Simply one of THE great American movies!

'The Honeymoon Killers' is easily one of the most underrated movies of all time. Often unfairly ignored as "just" a b-movie, or half remembered as trivia - the movie Scorsese nearly directed - it is in fact close to perfect, and one of the finest of all American movies dealing with murder. Why writer/director Leonard Kastle didn't make any other movies after this brilliant debut is both a mystery and a tragedy. His work is so impressive and fresh here, who knows what he could have been capable of. He may have turned out to be one of the greats, and even rivaled Scorsese, or Coppola, both having had a similar starts with low budget genre material (see 'Bloody Mama' and 'Dementia 13', their respective collaborations with king of the quickies Roger Corman).

The late Shirley Stoler is a knockout as bored nurse Martha Beck, and Tony Lo Bianco is equally impressive as her Spanish con man boyfriend Raymond Fernandez. Sadly neither actor got the career breaks they deserved. Stoler had small supporting roles in credible movies like 'Klute' and 'The Deer Hunter', and cult favourites like 'Frankenhooker' and 'Miami Blues', but always seemed to overlooked because of her weight. Lo Bianco starred in excellent sleepers like 'The Seven-Ups' and 'God Told Me To', but more often than not ended up as second-Mafioso-on-the-left in crappy movies like 'Boiling Point' and 'The Juror'. Too bad, both are brilliant here and had the potential to go on to better things.

'The Honeymoon Killers' is a minor masterpiece and should be essential viewing for all movie buffs. Don't miss this one!

Who can take a sunrise?

The Candy Man is George Sanders, a nattily dressed dope peddler with a kidnapping sideline. When American starlet Julie (Leslie Parrish) flies into Mexico City for some promotional work, Sanders--in a creepy opening sequence--scopes out her young daughter as a potential victim. Thanks to one of his dope fiend customers, he insinuates a babysitter (Gina Roman) into Julie's household. Sure enough, nurse takes the incredibly homely child for a stroll in the park, where a series of misfortunes leads to her being accosted by a bereft mother (the enchanting Pixie Hopkins) whose real daughter has just died in the local hospital! Soon the police and the kidnappers are trying to hunt down the child. Who will find her first?

This isn't a good film, but it does have its moments. Sanders is excellent and doesn't display signs of the alcoholism that would kill him within a few short years. Hopkins is convincing as the addled mother who refuses to believe her real child is dead, and there's also a very cool Steppenwolf-style opening song by The Forum Quorum, an otherwise unknown rock band who were probably session musicians. Shot in Churubusco Studios, The Candy Man is a sweet example of late 60s psycho cinema.

…Can Heironymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe And Find True Happiness? (Anthony Newley, 1969) **

Little seen ego-trip for the resistible talents of writer/producer/director/composer/star Anthony Newley (featuring his then-wife Joan Collins) which, due to its copious and gratuitous nudity (including its creator!), is surely the most notorious production ever to be filmed in Malta – and, consequently, something of a holy grail for local film buffs! Given its unavailability, then, I wasn't overly disappointed in the poor (but certainly not unwatchable) quality of the print – and the film itself, possessing a certain sense of style, wasn't as worthless as its reputation would have it!

In itself, a flashy and pretentious semi-autobiographical piece obviously inspired by Fellini's 8½ (1963), it's largely set on a beach where the protagonist is apparently mounting a film based on his own life (how self-indulgent can you get?). In fact, what plot there is resolves itself into a music-hall revue with plenty of rather quaint musical numbers (one of which is reprised ad nauseam throughout) by Newley and others. These, however, are often interrupted by the surprising presence of legendary American showmen George Jessel (as a wise-cracking, white-clad Angel Of Death figure, dubbed "The Presence") and Milton Berle as the Mephistophelean Goodtime Eddie Filth.

Newley's choice of character names is, if anything, admirably Fieldsan: indeed, here, Heironymus Merkin is torn between Collins' Polyester Poontang and Playboy playmate Connie Kreski's Mercy Humppe (hence the film's unwieldy title). Occasionally, too, Merkin is able to step out of character in order to observe his own actions enacted, in the interim, by a blank-faced dummy! Also incorporated is an irrelevant adult-oriented fairy-tale, entitled "The Princess And The Donkey", involving the intimate relationship between one Trampolena Whambang and a mule (which then turns into a dwarf!); amazingly, this infamous sequence was filmed in Malta's Presidential Palace!! The cast includes other familiar faces such as Stubby Kaye as Merkin's long-suffering scriptwriter and Victor Spinetti as a bewildered film critic who, perhaps justly, blames Fellini for Merkin's (and, by extension, Newley's) folie de grandeur.

There's a possible goof, too, in the appearance of a religious statue in the background during one of the beach sequences; this was supposedly removed for filming purposes and, consequently, has been the cause of much consternation locally to this day! I'm also confused by the film's actual running time: the X-rated version I watched, which one would assume to be uncut, ran for 107 mins. (with the trimmed R-rated version being 106 mins. long)…but the BBFC gives its complete length as 117 mins.!

pathetic

If anybody is ever wondering why Jerry Lewis' film career stalled in the early 1970's one need only look at this fiasco. While the central plotline isn't particularly fresh the potential for comedy is there but the makers of this film never find it. The lowpoint in a film of many lows must be the wooden performance of Anne Francis, who perhaps thought she was still a mannequin from "The Twilight Zone".

"Eva, the Half Virgin" (and seemingly not even that)

I'm not nearly as qualified to review this as someone who actually speaks Swedish at all. (I actually had a Swedish grandmother, but even if she was still alive, I couldn't see asking her to sit down and translate THIS movie for me). But until a bilingual Swede (with way too much time on his or her hands) comes along, I'll give it a shot.

This film kind of resembles the early Ingemar Bergman film "Summer of Monika" (released in the US as "Monica--Story of a Bad Girl") and the later Christina Lindberg film "Anita" (recently released on DVD). It is also somewhat similar to the seminal Swedish sex film "I Am Curious Yellow", but without the tedious political diatribes (that movie showed that sex-hungry audiences in the 1960's would apparently watch ANYTHING to see some skin). The lead Solveig Anderson, however, is much more in the class of Christina Lindberg (with whom she starred in several later movies) than the downright homely female star of "I Am Curious Yellow". Of course, unlike any of the other films mentioned, this film was obviously aimed much more at a home-country Swedish audience than an international one. In fact, the plot about a teenage girl who scandalizes her entire small-town by having sex with various men sometimes for money(or a candy bar)probably would have perplexed the international audience who pretty much believed at the time that ALL young Swedish women were like this. The girl is put on trial for exposing herself to a homeless man and at said trial the hypocrisy of town is revealed since some of the much more respectable local men were also dipping their wicks in the the willing Eva. (I have no idea why she's referred to as a "half virgin" in the to the title, since she's clearly not even half virginal).

Sex-wise this is not a particularly strong movie, but personally I prefer these genuinely pretty Swedish girls-next-door types like Anderson or Lindberg to the Times Square skanks that were in most American sex films of that era, and certainly to the silicone-enhanced brides of Frankenstein you generally find in sex movies today. Of course, it's best not to watch a movie like this for the relatively tame sex scenes, but rather as a nostalgic window into a different time or different culture (and these local films often reveal more about a particular culture than the high-brow "art" films they release to the world). Obviously, this isn't Bergman, but it seems interesting (and would probably be even more so if they ever release it with English subtitles and I know what the hell anyone is saying).
