From Nashville with talent

This is a visual jukebox of some of the biggest Country stars of the 1960's, including four true giants of the genre, Marty Robbins, Merle Haggard, Buck Owens and Don Gibson. The usual inane plot shouldn't detract from the fact that there is a lot of good country music included in the film. Leo G. Carroll of'The Man from Uncle' fame is partnered with Marilyn Maxwell whose car breaks down and Marty Robbins tour bus stops by to help and he also gives them two tickets for the Grand Ole Opry on which he is the star performer. The main source of irritation in the film comes from Gonzalez-Gonzalez a would be Mexican funny man who unfortunately ain't funny. Amongst the song Robbins sings are 'Singing the Blues', 'Tonight Carmen', 'Green Green Grass of Home' and 'El Paso.'

DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE AND OUT AGAIN

Eastern European reaction to totalitarian Communist oppression found expression in surrealism, in retreat into the subjective and fantastical. The enemy might be dealt a deeper blow by indirect mockery and artistic inference than by explicit attack. Whereas realism is limited to the specific, allegory encompasses everything, the entire calamity of the human circus. There is no crueler criticism than laughter.

Jurácek structures what has been called his "masterpiece" around the 3rd book of Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels." His ultimate source, however, is Kafka, who, not coincidentally, he imitated in his first feature, "Josef Killián -- A Character Needing Support." The protagonist, Lemuel Gulliver (Lubomir Kostelka), picaresquely stumbles his way up the ever higher social echelons of the absurdist lands of Balnibari and Laputa, only to find no one at the top, no one in control, a theme familiar, of course, to Kafka. Man's hunger for justice, for moral harmony and logic, for resolution of subconscious conflicts, for at least someone or -thing responsible, are forever frustrated.

The haphazardness and disassociation inherent to dream language tends to inevitable incoherence. It is difficult, if not near impossible, to transpose the entirely idiosyncratic symbols of one subconscious, an author's, into the universal language of art. Very few have been successful (again, Kafka) and then only by resorting to classic mythology, literature, and religion as frames of reference for the personal and subjective. Jurácek, however, for all his visual and dramatic creativity and unbounded imagination, loses hold of his unruly and chaotic subject, piling one absurdity on another, ultimately rambling rather than building or leading anywhere.

Some images work better than others, especially, at the beginning of the film, e.g., a bouncing wooden floor through the cracks of which appear unapproving strangers and the bleached body of Lemuel's drowned childhood sweetheart. The continual chase and harassment of Lemuel by hostile Balnibarians, however, at times seems without purpose, merely there for dramatic effect and to impel events.

Still, the joy ride, the experimental adventurousness of it all, is fun, a welcome release from the oppressive here and now into all things possible and impossible.

It is a bus that has come from hell.

The Golden Age of sexploitation in the late sixties gives us another feature from Something Weird.

This one is towards the end of the era and it shows. There is actually a story here and much more action that would satisfy viewers.

The production values are still really poor, but there is enough to keep your interest.

It concerns a group of hooligans - four males and a female - that break into a house and rape a housewife after giving her heroin. A saleslady comes to the door and they giver her a sugar cube, presumably with acid, and rape her too.

They then steal a bus, kill the driver, and pick up two more women. Lots of action ensues, including rape and a really hot lesbian scene at the end.

This is definitely a film that earns the genre of sexploitation.

Buonanotte, popolo

Loosely based on a true historical event of the Italian "Risorgimento", the movie is set in Rome in 1825. Two "carbonari" revolutionaries, doctor Montanari (Hossein) and young Targhini (Verley) attempt to murder a traitor and are arrested. As we follow their ordeal, we also get to know humble Cornacchia (Nino Manfredi), who is secretly the satirical poet Pasquino; Jew Giuditta (Claudia Cardinale), in love with Montanari; Cardinal Rivarola (Ugo Tognazzi), one of the revolutionaries' fiercest enemies; a friar (Alberto Sordi) given the task to assist the prisoners.

Nell'anno del Signore (In the year of the Lord) treads on thin ice, since it portrays a real, dramatic fact with an often facetious tone; however, the mix of comedy and drama works and give the whole movie a bittersweet tone.

Acting is solid, with a special mention for the always brilliant Manfredi, who shines as shrewd Cornacchia. Also brilliant is Tognazzi as Rivarola - he resists the temptation to make him a sneering villain and portrays him as clever, cold and a little dreary. Sordi has a scene-stealing, intentionally over-the-top turn as the friar.

The main theme of the soundtrack is hauntingly beautiful and memorable.

Painfully dull.

Guess what? It's yet another bad Spanish-Italian-German film chopped up and sent to America where it can subject audiences to extreme displeasure! Actually, I make it sound better than it is. This thing is so bad, it wasn't even funny. It stars Michael Rennie, in his last role, as an alien from another planet who wants to take over the world using the most famous monsters: Frankenstein, Dracula, the Mummy, and the Werewolf (Played by none other than Paul Naschy). Rennie must have been desperate, you'd have to be to actually even consider being in this. How reviving all the monsters will help the aliens rule world is beyond me. It is commonly available on video as "Dracula vs. Frankenstein", but it was originally released as "Assignment Terror", although the only terror is the movie itself. This must have been an attempt to make people go insane. In fact, the only distinction this film has is the fact that it is only slightly better than Naschy's horror joke "Fury of the Wolfman", and only if you're drunk. Here in Akron, you can get it for $3.00 at the video store, but having seen it on TV, I wisely passed on wasting the cash. I suggest you do the same.

Review :

Extraordinarily unsatisfying viewing for none and null

Despite the producers attempts to make a film with some semblance of a budget and cinemascope and bright, pretty colors, the film just seems to be an extraordinary cheat on all levels. Unlike "M*A*S*H," also from 1969 but from 20th Century Fox, "The Extraordinary Seaman" clearly uses stock newsreels as a cheap crutch and as a substitute for advancing action - and when that wasn't enough, they further padded its meager 80 minute running time by manipulating the footage. The attempt throughout to blur the line between newsreels and the film's own footage is clumsily handled. For contrast, try the way this same line was more deftly and more trippily blurred by Richard Lester in 1967's "How I Won the War" with John Lennon. As others here have observed, the breaking of this film into six named "parts" was a pointless exercise. Hell, it didn't work any better when "Frasier" did it on TV years later, did it? Major comedic talents - in particular Mickey Rooney and Jack Carter - are simply wasted in subservient roles, and are allowed to disappear before the film's ignominious conclusion. The casting of the secondary leads, Alda and Dunaway, was just really strange, considering that neither actor projects any kind of romantic vitality. (I would insert that Alda has clearly never developed as an actor, and from that day to this - and as many have observed - he just plays himself in role after role, and merely runs his lines without adding either depth or nuance to characterizations.) I'd say it was astounding how Paddy Chayefsky used Dunaway's reputation as an on screen ice-bitch to monumental advantage in 1976's "Network," with perhaps the most hilarious sex scene ever filmed: the one with William Holden in which she never stops yammering about work for a second. In "The Extraordinary Seaman," there's no clear reason why her character is even there. In fact, the only actor who projects any warmth or depth is David Niven, who makes it all look easy as befits a grand actor of his caliber. However, the role he makes look easy is itself a stupid cheat - a gimmick role that I feel most people in the audience would have figured out long before Alda's character did, due to their 1960's training with twist-ending TV shows such as "The Twilight Zone" and "The Outer Limits." Niven's ever-refilling bottle is the only decent throwaway gag in the entire proceedings, and thankfully John Frankenheimer displayed the judicious restraint to keep the gag from filling the center of the frame as a hack director might have. Alda's character made sure to point each! and! every! other! facet! of Niven's character's quirks to the audience... several times. Even his attempt at mutiny and his repeated man overboard gags are ineptly handled. As a further "goof," one reaction shot of Alda in full face (Part V or VI) is quite clearly reversed and is as painfully obvious as some shots of William Shatner you find in the miserable last year of "Star Trek" in which the same thing was repeatedly done. And by the way, didn't some of those overturned trees in the run-aground sequence look awfully fake? Before TCM ran this film, I had never even heard of it, and now it's clear I know why. It never should have been made.

Very likely my favorite movie ever.

It's been thirty-five years since I first saw this movie. I remember it as well as any movie I've seen. I check every few months to see if it is available in any format. So far I haven't found it. It would be good if someone could be influenced to create a DVD version. I'd buy it in a minute. I'd probably buy several copies and give them to special friends. It may be my favorite movie of all time.

Until I saw the movie, I didn't realize that there was some special music that accompanied WWI. It's music that now brings a tear whenever I hear it. The portrayal of pompous generals and their subservient minions, as they are posting the numbers of deaths and casualties for the day, is beautifully done. They were simply putting up numbers. But each number was often a death. A death of a promising young person. This movie makes war appear as brutal as it can really be. The poor always die first. It would be nice if international law demanded that the political and military leaders of a country be required to send their own children into war first. If that were the case, there would likely be no more war.

This looks like something made in 1933. Its hard to believe its from 1969, what with the colors, the tracking and the sound quality. Obvious remake unfortunately fails in every way

This is a remake of "Man Without A Star", which packed a lot more star power, and a much better story. In fact, the biggest star in this version may be Western favorite John Anderson.

It is about a man (gee, could his name be Gannon?) who takes on a naive young man as his protégé. Unlike the original, both these guys are not credible characters. They have too much of the modern cinema touch in them, the desire to kill, kill, kill. They are more like a dork's comic book version of the original.

Neither character is likable, and the movie is much like a spaghetti western in that it tries to make you hate one less than another, which is how to choose who you like.

That sort of "director and writer" control freak format not only destroys the art and story of what they concoct, but it takes us out of the story, and makes us realize we're just watching. We're no longer into the story. Instead, we're just keenly aware of the presence of the director, writer, and others. They may as well just let the film crew walk around in the background. That would be less humiliating to them, as it would at least be honest.

A look at this film, and one wonders why the two leads don't just conquer the world in one day, since the movie makes them such supermen, and also makes them totally unidentifiable.

Every scene just fails compared to the original, which makes it even sadder, because the original wasn't a "great" movie, but compared to this, it looks like the Seven Samurai.

should be retitled "The Snooze"

boring, pointless film was marketed as "erotic" in it's day. In order for it to be erotic the actors have to be able to convey sexual excitement, and not one of them can. They can barely handle dialogue. The only reason to see this film is to see Dark Shadows cast member Robert Rodan bare his tush. Once that thrilling moment passes, the film is utterly worthless, so poorly made it's not even campy.

Review :

A thought provoking film that stubbornly refuses to be dated

I have recently watched Colossus for the first time in many years and find it still a classic for sci-fi purists. It seems sad to me in these days of 'explosion' sci-fi that there is little or no room for this type of 'conference room' drama.

Although the premise is a very old one in the manner of man creating machine in his own image, this film presents the story in the psychological and political arenas. The film is not overlong, yet the characters and their futility to stop the unstoppable is clearly developed. Although the technology of 1969 is the back drop for this tale, the message of Colossus comes through to us in our modern age of computers in every home. Like a Shakespeare play in a manner of speaking.

We are much wiser about computers nowadays though, and we grudgingly admit that trusting the red button is far better in the hands of men than machines if such things must be. So commissioning a project of this type would be ludicrous and far from plausible in the first place.

So why is this movie good then to myself and the other reviewers? Even though we may not create a defense system in this way, it seems to predict a visage of something that is yet to come. And it's a frightful one. The first words of Colossus says it best 'There is another system'.

Great Italo-Western, but yet depressing

The whole town of Blackstone is afraid, because they lynched Bret Dixon's brother - and he is coming back for revenge! At least that's what they think.

A great Johnny Hallyday and a very interesting, early Mario Adorf star in this Italo-Western, obviously filmed in the Alps.

Bret Dixon is coming back to Blackstone to investigate why his brother was lynched. He is a loner and gunslinger par excellance, everybody is afraid of him - the Mexican bandits (fighting the Gringos that took their land!) as well as the "decent" citizens that lynched Bret's brother. They lynched him, because they thought he stole their money instead of bringing it to Dallas to the safety of the bank there. But this is is only half the truth, as we find out in the course of this psychologically interesting western.

But beware, it's kind of a depressing movie as everybody turns out to be guilty somehow and definitely everybody is bad to the bone...

Still, I enjoyed it very much and gave it an 8/10. Strange, that only less than 5 people voted for this movie as of January 12th 2002....

"I'll only do my prowling at night."

Disfigured in an African ritual, Edward is kept, "protected", by his brother Julian by being kept chained up in attic. He fakes his death to escape from Julian and another man is killed to take Edward's place in the "oblong box". Film looks like a low-key, photographed stageplay, a well-dressed period piece having little to do with Poe's short story, besides the title box. This is one of those films to watch primarily to enjoy the cast, lush settings and photography, hooded killers, throat-slicings, and a couple of good scares along the way, even if it has little if anything to do with Poe, just don't get one's hopes too high up. It does have a good unmasking scene, and genuinely creepy twist-ending, which still stood out in my mind years after I had last seen this film.

Favourite line: "I'll only do my prowling at night."
